Bangkok, 8 February 2023 – Forty emerging leaders, trailblazers, and visionaries across Thailand were named winners of the 2023 Ambassador for a Day contest, which recognises young, ambitious individuals who are on the rise, and breaking the mould for gender equality to change their communities for the better.
Taking place on Tuesday, 7th March, the women Ambassadors’ group and women leaders of the United Nations will welcome the much-anticipated class of 2023 awardees at a reception hosted by the Belgian Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Ms. Sibille de Cartier d'Yves.
This year, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Dr Angela Macdonald PSM, is co-organising the initiative with UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Gita Sabharwal, bringing together 7 embassies, 13 UN entities, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with a host of special guests.

This year’s winners stood out from a multitude of over 280 creative video submissions, each showcasing their passion and commitment to the International Women’s Day 2023 (IWD 2023) theme 'DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.' Awardees were determined based on merit and the quality of their submissions, presentation, and originality.
The awardees will take part in a unique mentorship program to experience real-world diplomatic engagements with international representatives at the highest levels, and attend the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) International Women’s Day commemoration on 8th March in Bangkok.
For the third year, the Ambassador for a Day initiative has celebrated young people aged between 16 and 25, regardless of their gender, gender identity, sexuality or disability, who are taking charge, speaking out, challenging the status quo, and making a difference. Past winners include highly commended entrants, such as youth climate activists Phatteeya Yongsanguanchai and Aminta Permpoonwiwat.
In 2021, the Embassies of Canada and India launched the inaugural edition of Ambassador for a Day in a common effort to help build a more inclusive society and highlight the contributions of young people towards a more gender-equal society.
Hosts of the 2023 edition include the embassies of Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Israel, the Philippines, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UN entities in Thailand comprising the International Labour Organization (ILO),International Organization for Migration (IOM), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Volunteers (UNV), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office.
