EU-UN Human Rights Project: Strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in Thailand, 2023-2024
The Delegation of the European Union in Thailand signed an agreement with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights or OHCHR) in Thailand to launch a two-year project called Strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in Thailand effective from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024 with a total funding of EUR 1 million.
The project aims to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in Thailand through enhanced alignment of laws, policies and practices in line with the international human rights norms and standards; strengthened engagement with the international human rights mechanisms for the protection of human rights defenders and the creation of a safe and enabling environment for civil society for their work; and improved responsiveness to human rights concerns by national actors, the UN system and the international community.
The project will be implemented through fostering partnerships with the government, National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, civil society organisations and international community, including the UN Country Team through undertaking targeted capacity buildingactivities, awareness raising, monitoring and advocacy and strategic legal support, among others. Hence, the project will contribute to achieving SDG 16 for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and the promise of “leaving no one behind” under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by paying specific attention on the differentiated impact of human rights violations on gender, youth, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, environmental human rights defenders and LGBTIQ+ and migrants, among others.
