Invisible Lives:48 Years of the Situation of Stateless Children in Thailand (1972 – 2020)

This report is a summary of Invisible Lives: 48 Years of the Situation of Stateless Children in Thailand (1972 – 2020) as part of the project Ending Childhood Statelessness in Thailand: Developing an Accelerated Nationality Review Model through Research and Empowerment of Stakeholders implemented by the Legal Research and Development Centre at the Faculty of Law in Chiang Mai University and UNICEF Thailand, with support from the European Union.

Thailand is home to one of the largest stateless populations in the world. The problem of statelessness has persisted to this day despite systematic efforts since 1972. Despite the continuous implementation of various measures, cooperation among sectors and the development of frameworks and approaches, the vicious cycle of statelessness continues. 

This report features an overview of the situation of stateless children in Thailand, including barriers to obtaining birth registration and Thai nationality. It also includes policy recommendations and best practices for agencies tasked with addressing statelessness.
