Bangkok, 19 February 2024 – Thirty-two winners were selected out of nearly 200 entries submitted for the 2024 Ambassador for a Day competition, Thailand’s biggest creative challenge in support of gender equality.
Now in its 4th edition, the Ambassador for a Day initiative promotes gender equality with young people from 16 to 25 years of age, who compete from across the country for the opportunity to experience real-world diplomatic engagements. This year’s video competition focuses on accelerating financing and digitization for gender equality.
H.E. Millicent Cruz Paredes, Ambassador of the Philippines to Thailand, is co-organising the initiative with Ms. Gita Sabharwal, the UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand. They are bringing together women leaders from twenty embassies and UN entities, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as other special guests. These women leaders will be shadowed by the young Ambassadors for a Day winners.
The winners will be honoured at a reception hosted by H.E. Dr. Angela Macdonald PSM, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand. They will also be recognised at the International Women’s Day commemoration hosted by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and UN Women on the 8th March.
Hosts of the 2024 edition include the embassies of the Philippines, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Sweden, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thailand. Other participating entities include the International Labour Organization, International Organization for Migration, International Telecommunications Union, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Population Fund, United Nations Children’s Fund, UN Women, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office.
The winners were selected by the 2024 Ambassador for a Day Working Group composed of representatives from participating embassies, UN entities and Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices.
